  • The first commercial cell phone sold for $4,000 - It was the DynaTac 8000X in 1983. It was developed by Martin Cooper at Motorola who made the first mobile phone call ten years earlier on April 3, 1973. The phone weighed 2.4 pounds and had a talk time of about 30 minutes.


  • There is a town in Texas called Happy - the town motto is "The town without a frown".


  • A gentleman by the name of Derek Amato suffered a severe concussion after diving into a pool. Immediately afterwards, he became a musical savant and could play the piano professionally but had never played one before. This phenomenon is known as acquired savant syndrome in which extraordinary abilities emerge after brain injury, stroke or other neurological events occur.


  • The World Record for near-continuous trampoline jumping is 266 hours and 9 minutes - Jeff Schwartz of Illinois holds the Guinness Record for more than 11 days of near-continuous bouncing in August of 1981. He was allowed brief clearly monitored bio breaks to use the bathroom, brief sleep and eating (in accordance with Guinness endurance-based records). The feat was to raise money for cancer research.

  • In 1993, Yankees pitcher Jim Abbott through a no-hitter despite being born without a right hand. The hard-throwing lefty didn't let his missing hand stop him and enjoyed a decade-long career in the major leagues.


  • Chess Boxing is a thing. It's a real sport and exactly what it sounds like. For hundreds of years, people cried out, "Why can't we combine chess and boxing?" And in 1992, they did it! Chess boxing is a hybrid sport where two combatants play alternating rounds of blitz chess and boxing until one wins by checkmate or knockout.

  • The world record for fastest boxing knockout was two seconds! Ryohei Masuda set the record in 2008 when his opponent opened the bout by sprinting directly at him and Masuda decked him with one punch.


  • The CIA once used cats as spies. Cats were surgically implanted with listening equipment and released around sensitive Soviet locations during the cold war.

Love this series...cats as spies makes sense, platypus making venom seems unreal, 1st mobile phone was shown in the movie "Miracle Mile" with Anthony Edward's. Great stuff.
